Srikalahasti is one of the most important towns of Chittoor district of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city is a very important religious tourist attraction of the region as it is home to Srikalahasti temple. It is covered under the famous Tirupati Urban Development Authority region. Srikalahasti is under the administration of Chittoor district.

About Srikalahasti


It is believed that the Srikalahasti temple is one of the oldest temples of Lord Shiva in south India. Sriakalahasti is also popularly known as Dakshina Kaashi. The city is also said to be the place of origin of Kalamkari, the popular south Indian painting and art form. Srikalahasti derives its name from srpider  – where sri, means serpent and hasti mean elephant.

Geography and Demographics of Srikalahasti

Srikalahasti is located at 13°45'N 79°42'E.  It is situated on the eastern banks of Swarnamukhi River and is just 38km north of the famous Tirupati city. Srikalahasti is also one of the assembly constituencies of Chittoor district. The Srikalahasti mandal headquarters are located here. According to 2011 census, the total population of Srikalahasti was 80, 056 out of which 38, 995 were females and 41, 061 were males. The sex ratio was 1053 females per 1000 males, which is way higher than the national sex ratio of 940 females per 1000 males. The average literacy rate was recorded to be 78.66%. Male literacy rate was 85.15% and female literacy rate was 72.57%.

Economy of Srikalahasti

The economy of the region is mainly agrarian. A large part of the economy relies on agriculture and tourism. Since it is a popular pilgrimage in the country, people from neighboring states and in fact all over the country visit the famous Srikalahasti temple and seek blessings of Lord Shiva. In addition to that, the city is also where the famous art form Kalamkari originated from. There are thousands of local Kalamkari artisans who bring in decent revenue to the region.

In the past decade, the region has seen tremendous development. There has been an industrial boom in the region which has also resulted in increase of real estate and infrastructure facilities. Some large scale plants and factories like Lanco Industries and Vishnu Solvay Barium (Chemical Plant) have started in and around the town in the past few years. Prakash Ferrous Industries was started in 2012 by Prakash Group in Srikalahasti.

Transportation in Srikalahasti

The nearest airport to Srikalahasti is Renigunta – Tirupati Airport, just 20km. One can easily reach Srikalahasti via road or rail. Hiring a bus or taxi is quite easy in the city. Andhra Pradesh State owned Bus services (APSRTC) operators’ buses in Srikalahasti from the Tirupati.

Srikalahasti lies on the Renigunta-Gudur section of Guntakal (GTL) Division of the South Central Railway (SCR). A large number of south India bound trains make a stop at Srikalahasti. In addition to this, all the trains from Vijaywada and Tirupati also halt at Srikalahasti.
